2 things you should do when you are pulled over for a DUI stop

On Behalf of | Aug 23, 2022 | DUI charges

There are not many things as frightening as seeing those blue lights in your rearview mirror. The situation becomes grim when you learn that those lights are directed at you. But as you pull over, it is important that you know how to handle the encounter.

If the police pull you over for a DUI investigation or other traffic offense, it is important to understand that your actions can impact the outcome of your case. Here are two things you need to do during a police stop.

Keep your hands where the police can see them

As you pull over and stop your car, it is important that you place your hands where law enforcement can see them. Ideally, this would be the steering wheel. This is not the time to reach out for your wallet, purse, driver’s license or even your seatbelt. Reaching for any of these can give the police the impression that you could be trying to get a weapon. And the last thing you want is for an armed officer to see you moving in a manner that takes away their sense of safety.

Remain calm and polite

There are plenty of supposed tactics that can get you out of trouble during a traffic stop: flirting or crying, for instance.  However, when it comes down to it, it is in your best interest that you remain calm and polite. It is important that you are respectful to the officer. When they ask for your driver’s license, produce it and remain calm. The worst mistake you can make is to assume that you can talk yourself out of trouble during a police stop.

If you are stopped by law enforcement, it is in your best interest that you avoid pitfalls that can hurt your case. Knowing your legal options can help you safeguard your rights during a DUI stop.
